University of Iowa - Elizabeth Catlett
Exhibit Design
As the University of Iowa prepared to open its Elizabeth Catlett Residence Hall, Silver Oaks was brought on board to assist with the finishing touches. To honor the building’s namesake, it only seemed appropriate that the recognition
be handled in an artistic manner. Silver Oaks designed a 3-part exhibit that pays tribute to Catlett’s legacy, while also informing students about her role as an artist and activist, inspiring students to act on their own passions and be socially aware.
Across from the residence hall’s main entrance, Silver Oaks designed a large wall mural that features a prominent image of Catlett sculpting, along with a famous quote. At the bottom of
the staircase, below the entrance wall, is another large wall mural that details Catlett’s life via a multi-layered timeline featuring key life events and pieces of work. The true showpiece of the 3-part exhibit is Totem, Catlett’s 2008 marble sculpture. Located in the dining lobby, Totem is prominently displayed against a large wall mural that wraps around two other walls.
Creating an immersive environment for students, Silver Oaks designed larger-than-life images of Catlett at different stages of her life and a special quote – illustrating her passion as both an artist and social activist.
