Puget Sound Navy Museum

Interactive Projects

Silver Oaks had the rare opportunity to research the inner workings of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. Partnering with an exhibit design firm, Silver Oaks produced two computer-based touchscreen interactives for the Puget Sound Navy Museum’s renovated USS John C. Stennis exhibit, located in Bremerton, Washington. The exhibit provides a behind-the-scenes view of life at sea, allowing friends and family members of service men and women to share in the experience of life aboard a massive aircraft carrier. Visitors get a glimpse of everything from the mess hall to the flight deck to the crew quarters – seeing how this 100,000-ton ship truly is a floating city, complete with its own ZIP code.

The enormity of portraying a ship of the Stennis’ magnitude was quickly realized by Silver Oaks’ designers. Their solution: a customized slide interface that allows visitors to move from the ship’s bow to the stern across a 42" touchscreen, located near the entrance of the 1,700-square-foot exhibit.

“A Very Big Ship”

This interactive features a detailed illustration of the vessel and lays the interpretive groundwork for the entire space, providing a hint of what’s to come. Touchscreen hot spots contain more in-depth information and photos of 24 key areas on board the ship.

“The Power of Steam”

This interactive depicts an animated 3D model of the Stennis’ propulsion system, showing how steam is used as the driving force to make the ship move. Visitors sequentially touch each of the system’s nine components to activate a process that mimics the complexities of start-up.
